• Cannes 2013: The shot’s fired and we’re off!

Here’s the first video from our 7th annual trip down to the Côte d’Azur. It kinda sets the scene for what’s to come… Plenty of rain, rain, rain… oh and umbrellas.

Cannes in a Van Film Festival 2013: blog 2

You’d think that the south of France would be a haven of sun kissed beauty, at this point in time it isn’t, the rain has hardly stopped since the start of the festival and continues to wash memories off of the pavement. We’ve been teased with the promise of good weather and are yet to experience any vitamin D.

Cannes in a Van Film Festival 2013 – blog 1

Day 1: “And so the journey has begun.” It’s that time of year again, Cannes in a Van has made its annual trip down to the south of France to screen the finest selection of independent shorts from around Europe on the Croisette. Leaving London around 8PM on Tuesday evening, we hot-footed it down to Folkestone to catch the tunnel to Calais and begin our 13 hours drive down to the French Riviera. The journey began well, stopping off at [...]

The 66th Cannes film Festival has begun and Cannes in a Van is back on the road. A sneak peek at the 2013 Cannes Van, courtesy of Ford

Those nice folk at Ford have been busy preparing our new steed for 2013. This is the first we’ve seen of our brand new Ford Transit Custom, now coated in our trademark signal yellow with orange trim. Although lower than usual (the high-roof isn’t in production just yet), we’ve prepared a special height-gaining add-on and our lo-fi projection system has been replaced with something a little more high-tech. We’re now itching to get the show on the road for 2013 [...]

  • Daniel Day Lewis is Spielberg’s ‘Obama’

Once in a while something comes along which just works. The Queen and James Bond, Magnum PI in Murder She Wrote (okay I’m struggling) and now pre-Cannes, Spielberg does funny. The prosthetics really are good. See you in Cannes Steve!

  • ONE TO WATCH: Mum Says
    (dir. John Brown)

This is the one that got away, but perhaps it makes the film stronger for it. Mum Says is an intense drama about a young boy who lives in a fractured middle class family environment. He is coming to terms with his parents and who they really are. Brilliantly directed by John Brown, the film surprisingly walked away empty-handed at the 2012 Van d’Or Independent Film Awards. Though unsuccessful in securing a gold-van-statuette (who wouldn’t want one), the film  has picked [...]

  • Retro look: 2012 Interview with Rob Wray, Shortwave Cinema

Shortwave Cinema in Bermondsey is one of London’s few completely independent picture houses. It’s founder Rob Wray fought tooth and nail to keep it that way after 8 years of battling to make the cinema a reality. He started out in the 90s running Shortwave Films, projecting movies guerrilla-style in unusual locations around London, turning underground film screenings into all-night parties, long before Secret Cinema tapped into the online crowd and turned it into a commercial enterprise. We were proud [...]

  • A glimpse through the Google glasses

Is this the future of interactive movie watching and making? Google released this video of their newest innovation, the Google Glass. We’d be interested to experiment with a pair when it finally arrives, although right now it seems only the US is eligible.

    We’re making changes

Please bear with us while we make improvements to the CIAV website. The plan for 2013 is to focus much more on the films and the people behind them, so please look around and enjoy the view… then come back and visit again. It’ll take some time to get things ship-shape so thanks for waiting!

  • Address is Approximate (dir. Tom Jenkins)

The Winner of the Best Music-based Film Award at The Van d’Ors 2012, this incredible, strangely moving film is a Google Street View stop motion animation which began as a personal project by director Tom Jenkins. The film was a viral hit together with another short ‘Speed of Light’ and now Tom and his directing partner Simon Sharp are embarking on a feature for Sony Pictures! Well done guys!
