  • STUDENT FILM MONTH: Boy and Bicycle (dir. Ridley Scott, 1965)

    STUDENT FILM MONTH:
Boy and Bicycle (dir. Ridley Scott, 1965)

In celebration of student filmmakers everywhere and our Student Film In Transit competition, we’re launching Student Film Month at Cannes in a Van. Every day throughout February, we’ll publish a student film from somewhere in the student film-sphere. It might be a student classic like this 1965 long-short Boy and Bicycle from a young Ridley Scott… an award-winning masterpiece… or even a film directed by you. We’ll be publishing a wealth of moving images from the infamous to the obscure, each [...]

  • Damp Spirits, a Christmas film (dir. Mr Kaplin)

Damp Spirits, a Christmas film (dir. Mr Kaplin)

The Christmas holidays are here and while we’re enjoying some of the luxuries of seasonal cheer, we’re more than aware that there are many who are battling to keep their homes. We’re trying to do our bit by giving all proceeds from our next Screen Social to Shelter’s Christmas Emergency Appeal. We also came across this cute little short which sums up the spirit of Christmas from animator Mr Kaplin, who’s also giving any Vimeo tips received to Shelter’s appeal. Perhaps [...]

    Feel Flows (dir. Paris Zarcilla)

Music-based short films are often difficult to categorise but that didn’t stop director Paris Zarcilla ploughing much of his own money into making this cinematic gem which took the Best Music-based Film award at this year’s Van d’Or Awards in September. Paris came down to November’s music-themed Screen Social in London and had a chat to us about the making and funding of the film. His interview (in the cupboard) will be appearing online soon, but for now just enjoy the film…

The Man Who Couldn’t Stop Putting Things in Bins (dir. Louis Paxton & Paddy Kondracki)

This is a nice little mockumentary from one of our favourite new directors Louis Paxton (and Paddy Kondracki) who you may remember from winning Best Comedy at The Van d’Or Awards in September 2013. It was their entry into Virgin Media Shorts and was deservedly shortlisted.

Screen Social: Interview with DOLLFACE director Louis Paxton

A few weeks back, we hosted the first Screen Social to feature the new crop of films which make up the Official Selection for Cannes in a Van’s 2014 season. We also grabbed the filmmakers for a quick interview on the night. Idiot Songs // Villages of Ether (dir. Kevin McGloughlin)

As described by it’s director Kevin McGloughlin, this video for ‘electronic chamber music’ artists Idiot Songs, Villages Of Ether is ‘set in the subconscious. It interrogates what it means to recognise a difficulty in oneself. The video endeavours to depict struggles with anxiety and ultimately the elimination of self doubt.’

  • Student Film In Transit

    Student Film In Transit

IN 2012 we launched The Student Film In Transit Award. Alastair Aloo’s winning film ‘Gentrification’ was a great example of a short made with no-budget and a lot of hard graft. Alastair was rewarded with over £1,000 worth of camera equipment and a gleaming gold Ford Transit statuette. This year we’re mixing things up a bit, giving a wider opportunity to students and graduates by offering them the chance to present their ideas, show us their potential and gain wider exposure as [...]

  • KYASMA // Radioactivity (dir. Jean-Paul Frenay)

KYASMA // Radioactivity (dir. Jean-Paul Frenay)

This cinematic sci-fi thriller of a music video directed by Jean-Paul Frenay  (and funded by Swiss rock band Kyasma) tells the tale of a ‘looming crystalline disease’ that inevitably takes it’s toll on the promo’s main protagonist, played by Denis Carpentier. It was shortlisted for Best Music-based Film at The Van d’Or Awards 2013 and is included in the 2014 season Official Selection for Cannes in a Van. It’ll also be screening at the next Screen Social in London on Wednesday 13th November.
